Position Description:
The Catastrophe Claim Leader for the North America Claim Organization assures the strategic and tactical preparedness of the Property claim disciplines to respond to significant Catastrophe events efficiently, effectively and in accordance with traditional service, technical and reporting standards. Works closely with the claim operations managing Property, Marine & Auto claims to assure specific response plans, clear roles, definitive responsibilities and effective dedicated and variable resource availability and engagement that enables the Claim organization to activate and deploy the necessary resources to effectively respond to events based on volume, frequency, severity, unique perils, multiple geographies or other characteristics relating to claim response. 
Provides centralized CAT leadership, direction and support for the Field, Service Centers and National Desk Units with a team of resources that report directly and indirectly to the role. Drives workflow and process analysis to maximize resource utilization during non-CAT periods and streamline claim handling during significant events to facilitate capacity while maintaining service and technical standards.   
Works closely with Actuary, CCS, Business Continuity, Reinsurance, Treasury and other key business partnerships to support and facilitate the achievement of enterprise wide objectives. Responsible for the financial and operation reporting on events and works with the claim units, group claims and Actuary to establish effective event projections for the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
  • CAT Strategy- NA CAT Leader defines North American Property & Auto CAT strategy for Personal and Commercial Line claims. Provides strategic oversight of North American CAT planning and assures discipline wide coordination of CAT preparation, response and reporting.
  • CAT Capacity- Ensures appropriate capacity strategy is defined and outlined including claim staff, internal and external variable resources.  Validates capacity with appropriate Senior Management and Actuary. 
  • CAT Playbooks- Creation and semi-annual maintenance of CAT playbooks to assure clear roles, responsibilities and reporting requirements from all components of the organization based on frequency, severity, geography, unique peril or other such characteristics.
  • CAT Response and Logistics- Partners with Field, NDU and Service Center leaders on CAT response from an overall strategic perspective and event level detail.
  • CAT Reporting- Responsible for coordination of operational metrics and reporting from various precincts.  Oversight of CAT analysts and participates as a key member of the actuary Financial CAT projection process.  Executive reporting as required.
  • Partnerships- Develops effective partnerships with Claims Leaders, Actuary, Reinsurance, Group Claims, Corporate Catastrophe Solutions, Risk/Underwriting Committee, Corporate Catastrophe Solutions, Business Segments and others as required.
  • CAT Staff- Manages dedicated CAT Staff to assure service and technical results through matrix technical oversight with expected customer satisfaction and technical results. 
  • Variable Staff- Manages variable resource manager(s) responsible for the build out and maintenance of internal variable staff (tiers) and external variable staff (IAs). Partners with vendor management on resource sourcing, workflow and management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to draft succinct reports for Senior Level Managers and Executives.
  • Strong math skills and proven analytics to forecast and identify trends.
  • Extremely organized individual that can multi-task and manage multiple streams of information with tight deadlines.
  • Conceptual understanding of insurance financial terminology and reinsurance.
  • Adaptable, flexible and team/relationship oriented.
  • Ensures collaborative utilization of CAT field staff resources to minimize use of IAs. 
  • Maintains and manages the controllable budget for the team and manages CAT Pay and deployment expense
  • Drives results through the effective leadership, training and development of CAT staff and management
  • Ability to effectively monitor, assess and track dynamic financial information keeping track of rapidly developing changes in a time sensitive environment. 
  • Comprehension of the actuarial CAT event projection process and business unit detail.
  • Strong computer skills and aptitude with pivot tables, macros, slicers, formulas and new programs as needed.
Special Requirements:
  • Preferred location within the Northeast.
  • Business Travel approximately 30 %  (depending on location).
  • Extended/Weekend hours during significant events, peak times or reporting cycles.
