Job Description

Job Title:             Underwriter
Department:        Underwriting
Reports to:          Senior Underwriter, Assistant Office Manager or
                             Office Manager
Classification:     Non-Exempt
Purpose:          Perform the tasks necessary to underwrite and process crop
                               hail policies and related lines.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Reviews policy applications to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.  Verifies rate information on applications.  Contacts agents or other staff members if errors are found.
  • Enters data from applications into the computer systems. Prints policy forms and reviews for accuracy.
  • Answers agents’ questions about matters relating to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Assist with other duties and necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of underwriting rules and procedures.
  • Ability to rapidly and accurately enter information into the computer system.
  • Ability to read and understand insurance programs and apply information to work tasks.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to comprehend agents’ questions and concerns over the telephone and to provide correct, courteous answers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and maintain business relationships with Company personnel, agents, outside resources, and customers.
  • Ability to learn and use the company terminology, processes, and systems.
  • Ability to learn and develop skills in the use of department equipment.
  • Ability to work well with people in a team environment.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional.
  • Ability to work from oral and written communications.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to assist in other work related areas as required.

Job Qualifications

High School or GED required and at least 6 months as an Underwriter Assistant at Rain and Hail or at least 1 year of underwriting experience or baccalaureate degree.
